About

Hot Roll Design creates modern industrial steel furniture, hand-built by the team of Aaron P. Van de Kerckhove and Jack Lawton. Metal workers, sculptures and designers for over 15 years, their talents combine to meld strength, function, durability and artistic design into unique pieces.

Each artists in their own right, Jack and Aaron joined forces in their California studio in 2001. They were commissioned in 2005 by a Beverly Hills stock brokerage firm to make 60 desks. These had to be strong enough to hold several CRT monitors and still have plenty of remaining surface area to function as a desk. They also needed to look appropriate in a professional setting.

The resulting design is used in offices around the world. As users of the desks move to new firms, they want the desks that serve them so well and we supply them.

Hot rolled steel is hot for a long time in the open air. This produces a thick, tough oxide scale with the characteristic blue-grey finish associated with steel. Our products use this steel as their primary material, which also provides the inspiration for our name.

In addition to being blue, steel has a green aspect. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “The steel industry in North America has been recycling steel scrap for more than 150 years. The steel industry needs scrap to produce new steel, which ensures that all steel products contain anywhere from 25% up to 100% recycled content.” The American Iron and Steel Institute tells us, “Steel products can be recycled repeatedly without loss of strength.” Better still, Hot Roll products are designed and constructed to last for decades.

Our products have been shipped across the USA and as far around the globe as Australia. Their strong, durable and flexible design suits them for a variety of uses. What will you do with yours?
